"To whom shall we go?"
Excerpts from Psalm 73:23-28- "Whom have I in Heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire but You. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever... But for me it is good to be near God."
John 6:68-69- "Simon Peter answered Him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."
Where else is there to go but God? Everything will fail but He will remain. I think about these passages, spoken in the midst of a crisis of the heart, and both Asaph and Simon Peter cry out, "There is none but You!" There is no other unfailing source of life.
I have been at these crisis points, especially in the last couple years, and I find myself agreeing with Asaph and Peter. I know no other place to go. I know no other lasting source of peace. I still continually turn to earthly things for peace and life, but without fail they let me down. God uses earthly things to bless us and enrich our lives. But the moment these things are sought for what they can give, they become idols and are rendered useless.
Over and over I return to C.S. Lewis' essay, "First and Second Things." We must keep things in their right place. The moment we put relationships, for example, first, we think we have increased their value, yet in reality we have decreased them because they are no longer in their right place. Relationships, and anything, must be in their right place for them to reach their full potential. There is only one first thing. Christ must always be the first thing in our lives, otherwise everything is out of sync.
He alone is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
